Paul Caprio is the Director of the Chemicals and Contaminants of Emerging Concern Service Line at EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc. PBC. He is a Professional Geologist with over 35 years’ experience in the environmental industry and serves as EA’s subject matter expert on hazardous waste site assessment and remediation technologies. His experience includes technical oversight of PFAS Preliminary Assessments, Site Inspections, Remedial Investigations, mitigation technologies, and forensic studies. Through his active membership with ITRC’s PFAS technical working group and continued participation with PFAS-related SERDP projects, Mr. Caprio stays on the forefront of the continuously evolving state of PFAS.

Dual Membrane Passive Diffusion Bag[TM] Sampling for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Groundwater Samples

EA performed a field study to compare PFAS analytical results from groundwater samples collected using Dual-Membrane Passive Diffusion Bag[TM] (DMPDB[TM]) samplers developed by EON Products, Inc. and low-flow purge and sample techniques. The study was conducted by collecting side-by-side samples at 10 wells with known PFAS impacts during a quarterly sampling event at a Department of Defense site in March 2021. DMPDB[TM] PFAS results correlated well with the low-flow samples, were comparable to the low flow field duplicate sample, and did not produce results that affected comparisons to screening levels. It is well established that passive samplers reduce field costs, reduce investigation-derived waste generation, and produce samples with lower turbidity. Several passive PFAS sampling technologies are currently in development; however, DMPDBs[TM] are already an established, accepted technology for several analytes. This novel use of an established technology would provide an immediately available low cost alternative to monitor PFAS in groundwater.
