A SUCCESSFUL PETROLEUM REMEDIATION USING BOS200®
In 1998, Double D. Service Co. Inc. gasoline station received funding from New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Petroleum Underground Storage Tank (PUST) Fund to close underground storage tanks (USTs). A case was initiated with NJDEP when soil and groundwater impacts were detected. GZA initiated groundwater injections using BOS200® in 2000, which were funded by the PUST. BOS200® was injected to the saturated zone for biological degradation. BOS200® is activated carbon, macro and micro-nutrients, time release terminal electron acceptors, and a blend of organisms flourishing in aerobic to anaerobic conditions. A total of 4,250lbs of BOS200®, 3,850lbs of gypsum, and 10-gallons of facultative bacteria were injected. Groundwater samples were collected 30, 60, and 180-days post-injection. Results show reduction; but an increase in the source well. Other results show nitrite, nitrate and sulfate levels demonstrating anaerobic bioremediation of benzene. Sulfate would continue as the next available TEA.
