PLATFORM PRESENTER - Thought Leadership Around Remediation Decision-Making

Successful Agency Negotiation for Complex Sites – A Respondent’s Perspective

Successful agency negotiations require a careful and thoughtful approach that considers and balances numerous variables, many of which are above and beyond the technical aspects of the project. This is even more significant for complex and non-conventional sites where there are fewer examples and less precedent. Message delivery and to whom the message is delivered are often as important as the technical content of the message. Understanding and addressing the needs of the various parties along with how the message is packaged and delivered are also critical to achieving the project goal. This presentation will explore the critical endeavor of Agency negotiation and will provide perspectives towards succeeding, gleaned from a quarter century of experience in both industry and consulting. Using examples both simple and complex, the perspectives, motives, and contributions required of each party to successful regulatory negotiations will be explored and pit-falls identified. Strategic variations for single party sites, multi-party sites, and the topic of multi-level communication will also be explored.
